Living with Pets & Plants

Plants are great for us: they provide joy, stress-relief, and clean the air in our homes. Many of us who loves plants also love our other, furrier, housemates, and we often field questions from customers concerned about choosing plants companions that are compatible with their four-legged family members. Here's our list of the top pet-friendly plants for your home, that will happily cohabitate with Fido and Fluffy:

Tough as nails and pet-friendly, what's not to love about Bromeliads? These colorful and varied plants grow in nature as epiphytes, clinging to the bark of trees, rocks, or other surfaces. They can be grown in a soilless mix, or mounted on cork bark or other surfaces

and they're super-easy to care for--just a daily spritz with lukewarm water or a bath in the sink

a couple of times a week keeps them happy. Most prefer bright shade and need little else.

It turns out, the world's largest family of flowering plants is also a great choice as a housemate for pets! While folks often imagine that orchids are "exotic" and therefore hard to grow, it turns out that most species make easy houseplants with just a humidity tray and a bright spot out of direct sun! We have orchids for every level of experience and every interest

Always a popular favorite for their deep-green lush foliage and ease of care, Staghorn Ferns are marvelous plants for house or porch, and safe for all your furry buddies!

From the iconic Venus Flytrap and Sarracenia Pitcher Plants native to the U.S., to the more exotic Tropical Pitcher Plants of the genus Nepenthes, plants that eat bugs are also safe companions for your pets. Though they're a nightmare for flies and ants, these plants don't consume mammals, so your kitty's safe!

Easy and fast-growing with stand-out tropical flowers, Passion Flower vines are popular for good reason, and it turns out, they're also perfectly safe for your pets. While some vines that produce beautiful blooms aren't so pet-friendly, Passifloras are excellent. In fact, some species produce fruit that's edible for both humans and pets, and an extract of dried Maypop (Passiflora incarnata) is even prescribed by some veterinarians as a calming remedy for anxiety in pets (be sure to consult your vet before giving your pet any supplement, of course.)

All of the tropical Hibiscus we offer are pet-safe, and they offer outstanding bang-for-buck, flower-wise! Nothing's more tropical than the sunny yellow, glowing orange, or cheery pink of a Hibiscus blossom, and these plants are happy to provide you with a continual show, given sun and even moisture. In fact, they're among the relatively few sun-loving plants on our "pet friendly" list!

The genus Epiphyllum represents the most beautiful flowers in the cactus family and since they're tropical, these beauties are tolerant of more regular watering than many other cacti.

From the sensational nighttime blossoms and perfume of the Lady of the Night (E. oxypetalum) to the enormous day-blooming species, these succulents come with few spines and enormous, colorful blossoms and are completely pet-safe!

Flowering and edible Gingers are safe for pets and produce robust, lush foliage topped by exotic flowers (not to mention, edible roots in the case of Culinary Ginger!) These plants are a great choice for outdoor growing in the garden or porch (lift the rhizomes and overwinter indoors in non-tropical regions), multiplying quickly with simple care. They can also be grown indoors in a sunny location in a large pot

We love Abutilons in every shade, shape and size--and Fido can, too! These easygoing plants are equally at home on windowsill or porch, and the flowers are even said to be edible for both humans and pets.

Many more of our offerings are pet-safe, and we have databases that help us research any plant you're concerned about, so please get in touch if you have questions about any of our offerings!
